Win2k Advanced Server permissions

I had Win2k Pro on my computer and setting up permissions seemed pretty easy for serving a web page. Advanced Server seems very confusing to me. How do inheritable permissions work exactly? What does it mean when the selection is checked but grayed out? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the checks are checked but gray it means that the permissions have been set at a higher level. If you want to override the global permissions (ie the permissions set higher up) then uncheck the box that says "allow inheritable permissions from parent to propagate to this object", then click the remove button when it pops up--this will remove any usernames that were in the upper box, since they were being inherited from above. You can now go back and add whatever users you want and give specific permissions to each user.

Now if you want these new permissions to propagate to all subfolders under the folder you are in, click advanced and check the box that says "Reset permissions on all child objects and enable propagation of inheritable permissions" NT 4 had a much simpler way of saying this, but this just sends whatever permissions you just set in the upper folder down to any subfolders and files that may already exist or will be created.

I hope this helps a little, I find that win2k server editions are kick ass OS's and are very powerful when it comes to permissions. If you dont mind me asking however, what are you using an os as powerful as Win2k AS for?

i was using it to serve a web page of mine but basically win2k as gave me too many problems and so im back in win2k pro.

is it possible to set up virtual sites in win2k-pro or only in advanced server? by virtual sites, i mean virtual websites that are addressible by different domain names, which exist under the main web root, and not the main site root. in 2kpro i have only been able to set up one main website, and then have virtual sites/directories under that main site. the problem this causes is that if i want to turn off one of those sites, i have to turn them all off. is this correct, or am i not setting something correctly...?

what the heck is datacenter server? how is just plain server compared to advanced server or professional?

Datacenter is actually a combination of hardware and software, meaning you cant buy only the OS. The os itself is cabable of using (i think) 32 processors and 64 Gb of RAM.

But like it said, its only available through OEMS, who will sell you the server with Datacenter installed.
