win2000pro trouble

I'm getting this message whenever I try to copy a program from my cd to my hard drive
system\current\controlset\virtualdevicedrivers.vdd.virtual device format in the registry is invalid. Choose 'close' to terminate the application.

What is this and how do I correct it thanks

is event viewer in administrator tools any clearer? get there by selecting my computer/control panel/admin tools/event viewer/application log and system log...things with red X's are problems that accurred.
may there will be an error code that you can search with...
