Hello,
Is this possible. I assume it is, so I will ask my real questions now. I want to have a 400mhz machine acting as a file server running Win2000 Professional, and I have two pc's and a laptop that I want to network to the file server. The laptop is running Win2000 Pro, and the two desktops are running win98se. All have 10/100 nics and I have each node connected with cat5 cable to a Linksys 5 port hub. Its a pretty simple and standard networking setup using cheap off the shelf components readily available at Best Buy. I have been able to network the two pc's with the hardware, but they were using WinME, and it has a simple networking wizard. I also want the file server to be the puter that connects to the internet for the rest of the network. The fileserver has a 30gig harddrive, K6400 and 64 megs of ram. The two pc's are P3 550's with 256ram, voodoo3, 19inch monitors, and cdrw's.
Both PC's will be workstations using Adobe Photoshop, Coldfusion Studio, Flash 5, Office, IE6, Quake3 🙂, Reason, and other music and video editing software.
What steps do I need to take to set this network up? I don't need lengthy explanations, as I pretty much understand the entire networking thing, but I've never had to do this before, so I could use a little help.
I assume that I need to first shutdown all of the computers once each is ready to be networked. Then I would need to make sure they were all connected to the hub with the cat5. Should I then reset the hub, Since the network I am setting up is nothing like the previous network? I would then think I would power up all of the computers, and begin setting up the network. I want the fileserver to be called File Server on the network, and to be computer #1. I want the two PC's to be called workstation1 and workstation 2, and to be computer's #2 and #3. I want the laptop to be called Laptop and to be computer number 4. I also have another computer upstairs running Win2000 Pro, and I may add that as the fifth computer, calling it Upstairs, and being computer #5.
I also have a HP OfficeJet, and I want to hook that up to the file server. What do I do to set it up so all nodes on the network can use this printer as if it was directly hooked up?
I am not running a wireless network. On the hub it has a port called uplink. I assume that if I wanted to get a cable modem for the network, I would hook the cat5 from the cable modem here.
I appreciate your help as it will help me start the new year off on the right foot.
