win2000 stuttering with games / virtual pc

hi! my windows 2000 system is pretty fubar'd... i think i've finally traced the problem to my swap file, though, but i'm not sure at all (that's only a wild guess based on what http://us.hercules.com/support/readtechnote.php3?id=52&prodid=2&c=0&p=20 has to say. now that i think about it, i kind of doubt that that is the case. i upgraded from win98 if that's of any consequence...

swap-file: 768 - 1536 mb
ram: 512 mb

here's an example:

i run starcraft...

it sits at the loading/splash screen for a long while.. ||OR|| i alt tab out, and go back in and instantly..
in both cases, the game main screen loads
and, in both caseseverything is very stuttery

but, if i do it differently still:
i run starcraft
i ctrl alt esc out
end task on explorer.exe
come back
the game runs fine, without stuttering or anything...

with virtual pc, everything stutters, explorer.exe running or not...
