Win2000 Server and WinXP Pro

I seem to be missing the Documents and Settings folder on all my WinXP Pro systems.

A little background . . . I had 5 systems happily running Windows 98 on a peer-to-peer network when I was talked into getting a server running Windows 2000 Server and upgrading the user systems to Windows XP Pro.

Since doing so, I notice that I don't have a Documents and Settings folder on any of the user systems. Where did it go? Is it hiding on the Server somewhere?

I've never upgraded from 98 to XP, but I think the profiles might be stored in c:\windows\profiles if you upgrade from 98.

maybe for some reason they are hidden. set your os to show all files and then look in c:\winnt\profiles or c:\windows\profiles (like already mentioned) and see if you have them in there.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I have updated from Win98 to WinXP before, and everything always ended up under Documents and Settings. However, this is the first time I have worked with something that was updated on a system that was part of a domain. I have logged on as the administrator and changed settings to show ALL hidden files and folders, and this didn't show anything.

I hadn't thought of looking under C:\WINNT\PROFILES. I will give that a look first thing Monday morning and post my results.

Swampster, I'm pretty sure you won't have a C:\WINNT folder for the OS. The default for installs of Windows 98 is C:\WINDOWS as well as for Windows XP. You might see a C:\WINNT folder if the machine was upgraded from NT 4.0 or Windows 2000.

Also, it's always a bad idea to do an in-place upgrade of any operating system. Wiping out the partition where the OS is installed and then installing the new OS fresh is the best way to get a stable system.

It is not always a bad idea to upgrade an OS.

Check that "hide protected operating system files" is not checked in the Tools... Folder Options... View dialog.

Also, right click on "my documents" on the desktop, go to properties, and see where it points to.

DJ,
I would agree with you completely in that an operating system should always be replaced and not overwritten. That's not the point, as I am entering this office after the fact.

And yes, although they seem to think they had Win98 previously, it is my suspition that they actually had Win2000 Professional. However, this still wouldn't answer the initial question . . . where did Documents and Settings go??? The folder itself is not hidden, even though certain parts within are such. Also (in reply to Noggin), I do have everything unhidden.

I hadn't thought of looking under My Documents to see what is there . . . I will give that a look Monday morning also.
