Win2000 recognizes NIC but that's about all...plz help

Hey guys

I'm trying to get 2 PCs on a D-Link DI-604 router. My XP Pro machine is fine. My brother's Win2k machine is having problems.

I tried 2 different NIC cards in 2 different PCI slots, and Win2k recognizes them fine. I then test the card by plugging in 2 different cables (both tested and working on my machine) into the router and his machine. Win2k won't recognize that the cable has been plugged in...that is, no lights on the NIC or the router....weird?

The machine has a modem, not sure if that would/could cause any conflict. Other than that I can't think of anything that I'm doing wrong.

TIA

Tim

the first NIC was a 3COM 3C-905B-TX and the second was a Linksys model purchased last year. The drivers were automatically detected and installed by Windows 2000. The cards were recognized by the system, but the operating system always thinks that the cable is disconnected.

Hmmm....I have the exact same NIC and no problems, but then again, no modem....I would go into your network properties and check TCP/IP settings. It's probably set for that modem, which you may want to uninstall or at least disable.
