Win2000 rebooted in the middle of SP4 update, now BSOD on boot... repair?

hello,

i am in a situation. yesterday, i was updating a guys machine (sp4). at the same time, he was telling me about some spyware he had on his machine, so i was removing stuff from his add/remove programs list. then all of a sudden, the pc reboots. i am pretty sure that SP4 was not done updating yet. now, whenever that computer boots, it never quite makes it into windows (whether i try normal mode, safe mode, or last known good config). after the wind2000 splash screen, i get a BSOD referring to some dll file. at this point, i am assuming windows needs to be reinstalled or repaired. if i boot to a win2000 cd and do a repair install... will it preserve the profiles? meaning, will his profile (admin) be overwritten? also, would i need to reinstall his programs (ie - office2000)? thanx in advance!

A repair (do like you're installing, select the existing install, hit R) will preserve the registry and profiles.

However, you qualify for a free trip to Microsoft Enterprise Platform support. Give MS a call and tell them you had a crash during sp4 and you need to speak with the "EP setup" team. You are by no means dead on this. The initial customer service hold times may exist but the actual setup team is idle and waiting on customers right now (@noon ET).

I ran into a system that trashed itself after sp4. Reloaded over the top, but it still had a couple of odd glitches. So I backed it up and wiped it out. Got everything fired back up, installed SP4, and it blew up again. So I wiped it again and stopped at SP3 and all the rest of the patches. The system works fine now. A friend had a couple SP4 episodes also. One ended up being a wipe and reload, the other he found some info on how to fix it.

Hopefully yours turns out ok.

If you end up having to reformat, slipstream the SP4 update onto a new setup CD so you won't have to go through this headache again.

Why in the world were you deleting programs while the OS was updating?
It shouldn't be a surprise that it bombed out.

SP4 is Microsoft's nightmare release to unsuspecting Corporate IT Departments.
(screw up the release so bad to force UPGRADE compliance (Server 2k3) is the best I can figure)

You are such a bitter little troll. If you don't have anything positive to contribute to the man's problem why don't you just go fvck off?

damn i get another BSOD even before i get to the setup options now. not looking pretty.

If I read this right, you booted to CD to start a repair and got a BSOD? If so, you've got a hardware problem friend. Is that what happened?

Having a bad DAY (week/year)?

I did ask the user why he thought that it was OK to UPDATE the OS while he deleted other programs.
(where do you get bitter from that? - YES. Microsoft messed up SP4. Pure and simple)

Please read the USERs Message again. It Blue screend when installing SP4 and deleting programs, not while
doing a repair.

Please in the future, keep your ignorant comments to yourself.
