Win2000 Pro instal feezes at "copying files"

I have built a new machine for a friend but cannot get the darn thing running. The problem is this...when installing Win2K, I get past drive format, the disk check, then it says "making a list of files to copy" and starts copying files. At seemingly random parts of this process ( 9%, 15%, etc.) the machine freezes and the HDD light goes out. The CD Rom then spools down and it is end of story. Sometimes, after it freezes, the blue install screen goes away and I get a black screen with verticle red bars, one letter wide, with the letter "w" in the bars. This last thing is a 30% of the time occurence.

Here is what I have done:
I have switched every piece of hardware over to known good parts with the exception of the P4 1.8Gig cpu and the Asus P4B266 mobo. No workie.
I have played musical chairs with the memory sticks looking for bad or misplaced memory. No workie.
I have checked all connections and used different HDDs. No workie
Finally, I used a different computer to load Win2K on to a hard drive and then put the drive into the new machine. Result....During windows startup screen I get a Blue Screen O' Death. No workie.

I am scared that the Mobo might be the problem or the CPU because those are the only things that have not been changed out yet.
Any ideas? Could there be a BIOS or MOBO config I am over looking?

Thanks for reading this long post and offering suggestions.

you should enable SMARTdrive and rewrite your MBR.

what's the MBR got to do with this?

might be the MOBO, since you say you've used different drives

In addition to what tiger said(no overclocking), make sure anti virus program is not on and OS P&P is set to on(or is it YES). just sharing my experience. Good luck

If there was a previous OS, the MBR could be corrupt as was mine when I had this problem.

but the problem occurs while transferring file, not writing to or accessing the MBR.

Mitchydkid: have you tried different ide cables?
