Win2000 Pro: How do I do a "standard PC" install, and do I even want it over an ACPI install?

Ok...to install the Standard PC HAL you press F5 when it tells you press F6 to install SCSI drivers right?

Well I have to press F6 to install SCSI drivers because I have a Promise Ultra100 PCI...

So, how do I get to install my "SCSI" drivers and set it for Standard PC HAL?

Also: Do I really want a Standard PC HAL? I installed it with ACPI HAL in october, and the only problem I had was that my ATi TV-Wonder has piss-poor Win2k drivers....so what are the real benefits of Standard vs ACPI?

I'm of the mind, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". So I'm trying to determine if there is any real benefit to the Standard PC HAL over the ACPI...

Thanks in Advance.

hmm the main reason why most people disable ACPI is due to the fact that all your peripherals are utilizing one specific IRQ such as 9 or 11 , while this works to some degree it also slows down the pc. My video card gained a 8-10 fps imporvement in timedemo's using Q3 once i had disabled ACPI.

Keep the ACPI in my opinion, you have been running it for months with no problems, the biggest benefit for the standard pc hal is only if you have problems with ACPI. I haven't noticed a slow down on my pc and if the shared IRQ's work on your system, setting up devices is MUCH easier with the ACPI HAL, IMHO

I have to agree with rvB5. The only performance degradation on ACPI-enabled systems I've seen happened because one or more device drivers weren't fully compliant. Once you get the drivers sorted out, a system with compliant hardware works much more easily with W2K. Besides, if you use the Standard PC HAL, it can be pretty easy to run out of IRQs for your devices.

Jim

You don't have to make the final choice when installing. In Computer Management go to the Device Manager, then click on the Computer entry on the right. It will open and tell you if you are running Standard PC HAL or ACPI PC HAL. To change one to another just select it, hit Properties and then on the driver tab hit the Update Driver button. Make sure you select the option to let you pick a device, and then you'll need to have it show you all compatible hardware. Pick Standard PC from the list, reboot, and your set.

True, but APCI to Standard works better than going the other way, though there is a method of forcing re-enumeration of devices that might make the Standard to APCI switch work better.
