My friend has a 40gb IBM40-GV that seems near to be dieing. (weird sounds etc..)
So he decided to buy a maxtor 40gb and transfer everything on it (including the OS) [only one 40gb partition]

Here is the catch : After we copied the IBM on the MAXTOR, and booted windows2000 from the maxtor, that setup:
Primary controler master : MAXTOR
Primary controler slave : IBM
Secondary controler master : CD-ROM
Secondary controler slave : nothing

We noticed that the O/S was loaded from the D:
But the D: was the MAXTOR!!! [I don't get it]

Then we tried that way
Primary controler master: MAXTOR
Primary controler slave : nothing
Secondary controler master : CD-ROM
Secondary controler slave : nothing

Now windows2000 loops after trying to log on... (seems like there is only a D: .. no C:)

Problem is simply that windows DONT WANT the maxtor being the C:, he wants it to be D:!! whatever we do
So what I really need to know is how can I boot windows from the MAXTOR AND that drive would be C:, That's all...

Did you change the boot in the BIOS?

Sometimes you have to tell the bios what HD you want to boot from, then make sure it detects the Maxtor in the bios. Having it as Primary master, you should be able to boot from the drive, as long as it's not detecting the IBM in the bios.

How did you copy the partition to the Maxtor ? One of the proper ways (starting with an empty new drive) is to use Partition magic to copy the entire partition over, and DON'T tell it to change drive letters (if your version does that). After the partition has finished, and the cache is flushed, and it is about to re-boot, power down, and remove the old drive, rejumper the new drive to be the only one, and power up. All is fine. If you let the computer re-boot, or tell it to map drives, or just copy files over, all sorts of ugly things can happen. If you want to do something like this, you will need to remove the partition on the new drive before you try again, and make sure the old drive boots normally before you even start.

I used MaxBlast II (Maxtor partional program) And it had an integreted system to copy an entire drive onto another. It took almost 4 hours.

But I did not move the drives psysically since the start, maybe I should first put the IBM master... COPY... then set it slave
I guess I'll try that

Thanks guys.

Absolutely correct. The trick is to remove the source drive before powering up the system once the copy is done.

Hum did not work.

Do you guys mean that I need to make the whole copy... then when I get the message "copy finished press here to reboot"
I just "hot deplug" the source HD ? Isn't that unsafe?

Damn I tought It would be simple.. =(

THanks mark I followed that exactly that way [altought I did not see the "don't tell it to change driver letter" thingy] and it worked out.
Finnally... in the end I made like 4 or 5 40gb copy, took a while, I'll know what to do for the next time, Experience=Knowledge afterall.
