Win2000 locks up after monitor shuts down, and other fun things.

I have had this computer working for about 1year with no problems until recently. It started when I loaded "Cubasis" an audio editing program. I loaded it and it ran fine, even finished the audio project I was working on. But after editing my audio with the program, I started to burn a CD of it, that is when everything started messing up. The program that I have used for the past year for burning CD's (with no problems) suddenly now locks the computer. Even Clt, Alt, Del will not work. So now I decide to remove the "Cubasis" program, since that is when the problem started. I remove it and try the CD burner and same thing, LOCK-UP!! So I remove the CD burning software and reload it and now the CD burner works again.

I really don't need the "Cubasis" program so I just leave it out, and since the CD burner is reloaded and working again, I think everything is back to normal. WRONG!!!! Ever since this happened (about a month ago) I have noticed lots of little "bugs". Some are minor, some not.

1. When restarting the computer, it will load to the desktop, then turn blue for about 20 seconds, then go back to the desktop.
2. Win2K locks up MUCH more often than before I loaded that software.
3. Windows media player will play a video from the hard drive fine, but if it tries to download one from the internet, it locks up - every time. I have reinstalled it, but it still does the same thing. It worked fine before.
4. The last problem I have noticed is something new. This just started yesterday, so it might not have anything to do with the other things. The monitor is set to shut off after 10 min. When it does, the computer locks. Nothing works Clt, Alt, Del -- Esc -- mouse -- nothing. I have to power it down and restart. It does this every time -- very annoying. :|

Now the question: How can I get this computer totally back to "normal" -- like it was before I loaded that software??? Is there anyway to do it without starting over and reinstalling Windows?? How can I completely reverse everything that the "Cubasis" program did???

Thanks!!!

Update: The lock-up problem is getting worse. Now it locks every few minutes, and on restart, it will lock-up every time before it finishes loading. I have to run Win2000 repair to make it load and run, then it only works for about 5-10 min before it locks again. On restart it does the disk check and always finds errors and fixes them, then continues to load, then locks before it gets finished. The only way to make it finish loading is to run Win2000 repair again -- Then the cycle starts over again. Maybe a bad hard drive???? Better go, I'm sure it is ready to lock up again!! :|

Thanks for any help you can give.

Well it dosn't seam to be a hard drive problem. I ran a drive fitness test and it did not find any errors on the hard drive. So it must be a confilct in the OS. It is shutting down every 5-10 minutes and to restart I MUST run the Windows 2000 emergency repair, and that only works some times. If I don't, it ALWAYS locks up before it completely starts. It also runs Scan Disk EVERY time it trys to start (even after the Windows 2000 repair), and it ALLWAYS finds errors and corrects them (that is what it says anyway). Ideas?????????

I could sure use some help here if anyone knows how to fix this, or even where to start.

OMG !!! I have the same problem.. I never thought it being my OS.. But it may. I'm having the same troubles you are. I did notice when I did the windows update that it did help some.

I'm making some upgrades and one of those is a new HD and I'm going to do a fresh install of Win XP Pro :)

People tell me that it works much better with the new upgrades you can get.

Dude, I am having like the exact same problems you are.. I can't believe it.. I had power save on so like every 25 min my computer goes stand by. Well, when I would come back to the computer, it would be totaly locked up... And sometimes it will just lock up, for no reason.

Win 2k sucks :(

Thanks for the sympathy, but I don't think it is a Win2000 problem. Win2000 has been very stable for me for about a year. I think it is a program or virus or something else doing it. The problem, and question I have, is what to do about it without reloading everything. If it comes to that, is there a way of reloading without losing everything????

PLEASE HELP!!!!! This is driving me nuts!! I need my computer more than 5 minutes at a time!!

Just an update: Every time I run the Win2000 repair, it finds that

WINNT\system32\drivers\ks.sys

is not the original version and it repalces it with the version on the CD. That is the only thing it ever finds. After that the computer will start and run -- for a few minutes.

Hope this helps someone to help me with this problem.

Thanks for the reply. Not yet, I was hoping someone had a solution without doing that, but I am just about ready to do it now. I am sure that would fix the problem. It dosen't look like anyone has any ideas on how to fix it with out a reformat and reinstall. :( :( :( :(

It sounds like you are having a severe hardware problem. I can think of a few things off of the top of my head, check the RAM, the CPU, check that the CPU heatsink hasn't slipped or something, it could be locking up because the CPU is overheating, check that the power-supply voltages still look nominal if the motherboard allows that.
