Well, I really screwed myself pretty well with this one. To make a long story short, I was disabling services that I did not need running because they were interfering with high resolution TV capture from an ATI AIW 9800 Pro video card. I got a little carried away in disabling the services, and while I was diabling DHCP, DNS, FTP, Web, Telnet, RPC, Wins, NetBIOU, remote administration, remote storage, etc. I also disabled "Telephony" which was discribed as controling VOIP and incomming telephone connections (but it seems to also control ethernet communications as well...thus no network), and a few other services that seemed to be benign according to the descriptions...
Well, I figured worst thing that could happen is that I boot into safemode and re-enable the services, no big deal right? Wrong! I can boot just fine, once I log-in I get the generic "One or more services or drivers were not loaded or running" message. When I went to re-enable the services (like Telephony), I right clicked on the service and selected "properties" to open the properties window to allow me to re-enable the service, but NO WINDOW OPENS! Some of the other windows are screwed up (like the control panel, everything is listed on the left-hand side of the window in rows of 2, with a vertical scroll bar and the right side of the window being a blank frame area...). The windows configuration wizard that comes up to initially settup what services are enabled is blank as well. When I tried to close the services window, a pop-up error occurs, "Please close all property windows before closing.", and will not let me exit the services window. It believes that a properties window was in fact opened when I selected one to open, but it was never displayed. I also tried alt+tab to see it it just hid it somewhere, but it was not there either.
So, I guess what my question is to you guys is, aside from attempting a re-install, is there anyway to change the services that are run through the command-line or editing a file somewhere (registry keys?). Or do I need to attempt a "repair install" or something similar?
Edit: On the bright side, this fixed the problems I was having with high resolution video capture 😛
