Win2000 fubared the MBR - help please !

I had win98 on a new laptop and decided the first thing to do was install a competent OS on it. (Linux prefered but maybe later). The install went fine but I decided to put a password log in for it and the invariable happened.. I locked myself out !!! Guest profile wouldn't even work. After numerous futile efforts to try and remember what i used for the password I decided to reinstall it. 20GB partitioned into 2GB, 2GB, 15.xxGB C,E,F respectively.

I noticed it create some WINNT directory in E: which I assume is where the MBR is stored (odd). Anyhow, after sucessfully installing win2k the second time, I get 2 -- count them - 2 !! Windows 2000 options in the boot sequence.

I killed the partition and *believe* formatted it as well, but somehow boot shows 2 still.

Thanks for reading my novel - so what do I need to do to rid the 2nd one upon boot ?

Much appriciated,

Numb Head,

Simply remove the reference to the second installation in BOOT.INI located in C:\.

Much thanks Andy !

Out of curiousity, how would one get it to boot if no traces of either were in there. Like there was no boot.ini or it was just empty. Is there a safe mode to boot to and correct this mishap?

thanks again

Nope. WinNT/2K/XP just won't boot without BOOT.INI.

If such is the case, boot up with a floppy, and put a copy of boot.ini on there. Someone from the forums would be able to furnish you with a copy of boot.ini that you can modify to match your system.
