Win2000 and my NIC...help?

OK, I do NOT want to spend hours reinstalling Win2k, service pack 1, etc., etc..

So...here is my problem:
I just took my duron and got the thing unlocked. I start it up, having put all the cards back in, and it takes forever at "preparing network connections."
It take forever from then on no matter what speed I run at (800Mhz (factory) to 1GHz).
First, if I run two programs that access the network, I crash.
second, in my network connections, I have a local area connection 2. No 1!
Same with device manager...Realtek 8920 (IIRC) #2!, with no #1. networking is set to default. I get it so sygate will be happy to access the net, I get an error that basically says another adapater has this IP I am using...but I can't find it!

Anyone have solutions? My best guess is I put the NIC in a different PCI slot...but can I do anything aside from blow away Win2k?

Just my opinion: Everyone who is working with Windows 2000 should go out and buy a book on Windows 2000 professional; preferably an MCSE book on Windows 2000.

But anyways, to your problem. This is due to the fact that Windows 2000 is looking for a DDNS server to register it's DNS name. If you have a static IP assigned (along with DNS server addresses) your machine will try to contact the DNS servers. Since the DNS servers aren't Dynamic DNS servers, they will not respond. If you have DHCP enabled on the NIC, the client will try to do a broadcast search for a DNS server.

To fix this, goto the properties of your LAN connection. Then the properties of TCP/IP. Click on the ADVANCED button; then on DNS. You will see a checkmark box that should be checkmarked called "Register this local connection to DNS", or something like that. Make sure that it is unchecked. This will resolve the "Preparing Network Connections" from taking so long to boot-up.

If you have any further questions, let me know.

The problems occured on the first boot-up. But I didn't bother trying to run more than sisoft sandra until I hit 950.

It would take near a minute to "prepare network connections."

Trying to get more than one connection to the network (not just the internet, as I found out with Winamp--all the MP3s are on the server).

My dad couldn't figure it out either...no MCSE in 2k yet, but will be soon.

But the thing is, I have my install perfect aside from this one little thing. My best guess is I put it in a different PCI slot, or the resources just got re-assigned.

oh, AND...

when I went to the TCP/IP properties, the #2 one was set up at default!
I have a set IP and 2 DNS servers (So Sygate will be happy 😉 ), it had DHCP and dynamic DNS set...as though it just found a new card.

Very, very weird.

Well, fixed it!

I tried taking out the card and putting it back it (with a clean boot and shutdown in between), but it didn't work. Then I tried mvoing it...still nothing. The weird thing was it never showed the first one in device manager or my network connections (keep having the urge to say "network neighborhood" 🙂 ). Now I went and decided to put a NIC laying around in the machine. it detected it and all.
THEN I put mine back in and it is working fine (so I can now get it back to 1GHz 😉 ).

Really quick. Did you even read my post? You cannot enable Dynamic DNS on your NIC if your ISP does not have a DDNS server.
