Still can't figure out what it is. I boot into windows and absolutely nothing responds for about 20-30 seconds 5-10 seconds after desktop appears.

:hmm:

EDIT: this is for Rig2 in sig, btw (for parts reference)

Upgrade install or a Clean install?

I ask because there have been tons of issues with upgrade installations just as you describe. I had issues with an upgrade like that. When I redid the installation clean with exactly the same notebook Lenovo Thinkpad T540p it runs great.

I would do a clean install using 10. I had issues with the upgrade myself and resolved them with a clean install using the 1511 fall update.

Have you looked at the Startup tab in Task Manager? Take a look before your clean install to see what is having a high impact. It could be useful for comparison purposes if a clean install results in the same problem.

If he's got a lot of start ups they could also cause pauses during the loading process especially if they're on a hd rather than a ssd. I have a pile of them myself but my ssd keeps things rolling along. I've noticed that 10 loads slower than 8.1 on my desktop. With 8.1 my desktop exploded onto the screen right after I entered my log on while 10 seems lazy in comparison. Even with all of my start ups 8.1 would have everything done in under 50 seconds and 10 takes just over a minute to get to the same place. My laptop does the same thing and there's really no difference with my tablet.

Another thought is Windows Update. It's pretty much impossible to tell if it's running until you:

a. Go to Windows update and see what it's doing, or
b. Windows Update pops up asking you when you want to reboot

I would assume it would have the latest build (the one I did 2 days ago had the latest build), and therefore shouldn't be too many updates, but you didn't say how long you have been having this problem.

Is the hard drive activity light going hard during the unresponsiveness? If not, you may need a better driver. Is this one of the builds in your signature?

Mine just started doing this, when I type in the password at the login, it sits there for a good half minute everytime I turn the PC on. The OS is running on the SSD so normally it's instant.

When I say clean installation I mean with a bare hard disk with no partitions or delete the partitions during the installation.

I usually format my drive through computer management on a different machine, that way it's completely wiped out, before an install and with this install I did it.

It seems to have gone away. I'm thinking it might be due to corrupt files from unstable RAM as of recent, and an unstable Overclock - possibly but not sure. I did memtest HCI my system to 100% last night and it passed. I'm sure the OC is stable now, I'm back down to 4.33GHz @ 1.34v which is plenty, and my NB (uncore) is 3GHz with 1.25vtt - plenty, Ran sfc /scannow..

Today I reinstalled both my GPU and Sound card drivers ( Nvidia 359.06, SBZ CD L13 1 01 03 Creative Zx drivers), and I turned off "Fast Boot" and it seems to be fine now. I haven't set my CPU Priority back to Programs yet but games seem to run better with Background Processes ticked.

Seems when I updated to 1511 it re-enabled BITS, superfetch and Windows search, once I turned those off my login is instant again.

BITS is necessary for some other services though IIRC.

I have all that stuff turned on and my system is instantly usable.

6 year old Win 7 install upgraded to Win 10, had some bugs, 1511 update fixed it all. Really smooth sailing ever since.

I went for a long time with BITS turned off, never had issues.

Is that a stand alone app or does it need to install? Do you use it? And does it want to install any hooks, n crap?

It is portable freeware, you run one file (Autoruns.exe) look at the output and when closed it leaves nothing behind.
