At my workplace, we have an option for windows licenses for personal use at home of either win10 education, or win 7 ultimate.

If I'm planning to run win10, are there any 'gotchas' for choosing between whatever version an upgraded 7-ult turns into, and a baseline 10-education?

I would take the 7 ult and immediately upgrade it to 10 pro if going on an existing system or. Once you've done that you can clean install 10 pro on that system anytime you get ready to. If going on a new system then clean install 10 pro using the 7 ult key.

Win 7 Ulti Upgrade yields Win 10 Pro.

Win 10 Education is more features rich than Win 10 Pro, features wise the Educ version is acutely equivalent to Win 10 Enterprise.

That said, you have to check the specific lic. of your place of work to make sure that the Educational installation give you a real personal installation free from the Enterprise confinement.

P.S. You probably notice that 90% of the posting in this forum consists on the Paranoid Ideation of MS spying on all the "Genuineness" in the world.

The Education version gives One more control on blocking "Spying" aspects than those Win 10 Home and Pro.

Thanks for the link, JackMDS!

I think it does, I actually have access to two different licenses, one for "Home Use", one for "Work-at-home". The former says it can be installed on any machine I own and used for any purpose and retained. The latter says it can be installed on any machine that I own that is used primarily for work, but it has to be removed if I leave my employer.

I would definitely get the 7 and upgrade it to 10, even if I liked 10 better. I like having options.

The only caveat would be if the Windows 10 option was retail, which allows 10 to move to other computers. I have read quite a few people say already that an upgrade from 7 Retail to 10 locks it to that computer (keep in mind that was before the latest updates, so that may have changes).
