Win10 Diagnostic Policy Service 100% disk usage

If anyone has any suggestions for an odd problem that I haven't seen before. This service is constantly reading and writing into system32\sru\*.log to the point that it's slowing everything up and has been for several hours.

The service doesn't respond to service control functions either. I'm just rebooting the machine after switching off the 'send diagnostic data to MS' option, and I guess my next step is to check the logs for stuff pertaining vaguely to this service.

this is what must have happened to my notebook the other day. Yes, 100% disk usage and the cpu was stuck at "point 6" ghz. At the time i was cloning a vm that normally takes 5 to 10 minutes. This time it took
about 45 min with everything else sluggish. When the vm was done i flipped it over and pulled the battery. Sorry, no suggestions other than *$^@%# !(&<? microsoft.
