Sorry, you're wrong. That is NOT listed anywhere in the Windows 10 EULA, nor in their privacy statement, nor in the Microsoft Services Agreement. I have them in front of me right now and have dug through them. That is NOT in there.

Unless you've actually seen it for yourself don't go regurgitating something you saw on the internet.

I found a match for what he posted here:
http://www.slate.com/articles/techn..._s_how_bad_they_are_and_how_to_plug_them.html

Interestingly, that search returned ZERO hits from MS. What a surprise.

If you've been following Windows 10 through its development, you've probably heard a lot of the controversy surrounding the new update procedure. Gone are the days of picking and choosing which updates you want and which ones you don't. With Windows 10 Home, you're getting them all, and you're getting them automatically.

Microsoft wants its updates to work more like a website. Nobody wonders what version of Amazon.com they're using or how to get the latest patch. The only choices you get now are whether you want to defer updates (if you have Windows 10 Pro) that aren't essential for security and whether you want to install them and restart manually or automatically.

You can control your updates through the Settings screen. Just click Start and choose "Settings." Almost everything you need to do to manage your system is here in this window. Click the "Update & security" icon and select the "Windows Update" tab. Then click "Advanced Options." If you have Windows 10 Pro, you'll be able to defer updates, or enable Windows 10 to automatically update other Microsoft programs like Office.

That is in the privacy agreement, he just selectively quoted it.

Hm. The search button failed me.

Still, he took it out of context, from the wrong document. That is a general privacy statement across all services etc. I don't think anyone has found MS actively sifting through personal files on your computer. Stuff in the email that is actually hosted on their servers, well, that's another story.

You can't ctrl+f that page either, it's almost like they are trying to hide things.

Still, he took it out of context,

That he did.

As so many services are built into windows now just using the windows eula wouldn't cover everything. I can see why he used that and why Microsoft is moving to that.

If you do what Microsoft recommends all your personal stuff will be on their servers.

Damn it. I woke up this morning to find that MS has emptied all my bank accounts. maxed all my credit cards, and transferred ownership of my home!

Knew I should have never tried 10.

Not helpful mate.

I'd like to find out what's really happening without too much "OMGZ!!" on both sides.

So this massive data-grab, isn't a bug, it's a FEATURE! Win10 is the stealth backup system we've all dreamed of - Thanks, M$! System Restore+More!

However, as I am on data-capped ISP, I expect M$ to chip in to cover the overages. Been through the FAQs and stuff, but not seeing the Restore From Data-Mining Cloud option.

It's great that M$ is getting attention for invading privacy at the OS level - Google, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon and most startups have been whoring private data for money for years.

Maybe people will think about the implications - ok, think is too strong a word. At least Anand's forums get more hits and Purch gets to collect data too! Everyone gets more data!

(This post brought to you by Seagate who will never store your personal data on SSDs)

In general I don't think anyone is really physically looking at your data, but that said I still don't want my information on someone else's server just in principle.

Thing is with people having attitudes of "don't care", "why does it matter", "everyone spies on you so its okay" we are going to be getting more and more spied upon.

The West has had huge success in the economy, its been the freest and having all those freedoms and prosperity is taken for granted, as if it will always magically be there, breeding decadence, breeding ignorance and breeding stupidity.

IQ's are lowering globally, knowledge is lowering globally, trailblazing is all but forgotten, etc... We are in a dangerous period of utter decadence, utter ignorance, utter stupidity and utter self aggrandizing narcissists.

This allows predators to exploit the masses of sheep and Microsoft is jumping majorly in the sheep exploitation!

And that is why you use a local account and don't use OneDrive. Simples.

If you want to fiddle with my meticulously alphabetized by directory and sub-directory porno collection that is properly date and timestamped with cover scans, go right ahead MS!

Ever filed taxes? Ever gone online with any footprint (hint, you are online, you have a footprint), ever had a legal job? Ever had medical attention that is probably now in some electronic database even if its just a reference? Have a "smart" car? A "smart" TV? A "smart" phone? Hear those drones overhead? Those satellites? Those chemtrails? That black Tahoe parked down the block? :whiste:

I wonder if you can just block specific ports with a firewall to keep Win 10 from phoning home, auto updating etc...?

I am wondering that myself. There has to be something in a firewall that can block this, if not in a firewall, at least on the router.

I admit that the title may seem a little troll ish , but most of the posters confirmed that it tracks you. I see this Os version as better, by far more efficient, than its predecessor at this particular task.
As a bonus, Windows Update Configuration has now gone the way of the Windows 8 start menu.

Ms could have given it for free to everybody, but they don't. Google does not charge you. Ms has the audacity to data mine you and ask you for your money, all at the same time.

Well I see it as a matter of choice, you can either accept and use 10 or pass on it and stick with whatever you are currently using. Nobody is holding a gun to your head to force you to change, however offering it as a free upgrade is a first for MS and a smart business decision. Getting everyone on the same platform reduces development and support costs making it easier for MS without having to worry about compatibility issues like in the past. I love 10 and prefer it to all previous OS's I"ve used.

I was thinking that but if MS is smart all this stuff probably uses port 80 or 443. When I bother to try it out I'll have to check this with a packet sniffer.

Charging a monthly fee for an OS would be suicide for the OS maker. Who would want to do that?

Not going to happen.

Oh god, it's one reason why I don't like Office 365 and MS offered Excel and Word for free to mobile users because there weren't enough mobile users buying Office 365 subs. I have enough things draining from my bank each month, an OS is the last thing I want so if that ever happens I'm going 100% Linux.

Now MS is trying to install their NSA spying software on win7, win8 and win8.1 through their updates.

I suggest if you are running win 8.1 and older to COMPLETELY DISABLE win updates!
