win xp ?

Win XP is a memory hog. Basic minimum is 256MB RAM.
If you got Windows 2000, you'll need at least 128MB.
Windows XP does well at 512MB.

i tried installin it and it kept syaing missing files around 50%

now when i try to reinstall 98 it says it cant b/c the pc now has an ntfs file system

if i run dban autonuke will this allow me to now install 98 with no problems

also how long does autonuke usuualy take...its a 10gb hd

You have to reformat your harddrive back to fat32 for Windows 98 SE.
If you have a Win 98 boot disk, you can get back to business.

Note for your info: Win XP Home/Pro requires a bigger harddrive to install. Check the O/S requirements first, next time.

It'll work, but you're better off with win98 unless you upgrade the RAM to at least 128MB. Or try the fluxbox version of ubuntu (forgot what it's called) if you're feeling adventurous

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/upgrading/sysreqs.mspx

Here's What You Need to Use Windows XP Home Edition
?

PC with 300 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233-MHz minimum required;* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended
?

128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)
?

1.5 gigabyte (GB) of available hard disk space.*
?

Super VGA (800 × 600) or higher resolution video adapter and monitor
?

CD-ROM or DVD drive
?

Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

Edit: there's a warez version called tiny XP that's supposed to work well on low RAM systems. Never tried it though

Edit 2: I think you can use fdisk from the DOS prompt to get back to FAT32 easily

FWIW I had a customer bring in an old Compaq 250MHz Cyrix CPU w/ 64MB PC100 and a 4.3GB HDD with Windows XP Home running on it. Needless to say it was a turd so I sold him 128MB PC100 and cloned his HDD to a 13GB and it made the pc useable again. All he needed it for was word processing and to get on AOL 9.0SE. 🙂

I don't suggest running XP with anything less than 256MB of RAM. XP will run with as little as 64MB of RAM, but I strongly suggest against it unless you like staring at the hourglass while the HDD swaps like it's going to explode.

When I came back from living overseas, where I had been for little less than a year, I discovered that 'someone' (someone being an idiot 'tech' at my mom's work) had installed XP Professional on my father's Toshiba PIII laptop, with 64MB of RAM. I don't think I knew the meaning of the word pain in detail until I tried it out. Of course I wiped the drive and installed the Win98 that came with the laptop soon after.
