Win XP zoom out effect

My laptop tops out at 800x600. Personally, everything looks entirely too large at 800x600, so I'd like to mimic 1024x768 as closely as possible. I've found that by forcing Windows to use small icons and 80% font sizes, I'm partially there. But then I have to configure Internet Explorer (and I would imagine most other programs) individually. Is there a program or snap-in that just zooms out the entire display by a set factor?

LOL. Im no laptop expert, but do you have your REFRESH RATE set to high. On my older vid card i couldn't do 70hz with 1024x and with the new r9700 pro i can do 200hz at about any res becept 1600x1200. So check your refresh rate then try to change res. How old is the laptop anyway.. that may be the problem.

It's not likely a refresh rate issue... laptops have LCD displays.

Do you have the drivers installed for your video adapter? Without the correct drivers, WinXP is going to use default SVGA drivers that top out at 800x600 with 16 colors.

How old is the laptop?

The screen itself runs at 800x600 natively. But from experience with playing with visual styles and the like, 800x600 on a 12" screen can be made to look like it accomodates *most* of what a 1024x768 on a 12" screen does natively, albeit with less detail. I'm trying to achieve something similar to this, but without the hassle of manually configuring Windows' appearance settings.
