Win XP won't defragment...

I've had my machine built for me and the Win XP Pro OS which is installed is an OEM version.

I've tried to do a defrag a couple of times but it always tells me that it can't execute because of 'inconsistencies' in the system folder.

I have no idea what to look for. It advises me to run ScanDisk but that doesn't seem to be installed.

Can anyone offer advice?

You should probably run chkdsk to see what the problem is.

Thanks but 'chkdsk'? what's that? is it related to ScanDisk? whatever it is I don't seem to have that installed either.

I don't really seem to have much beyond the Defragmenter and CleanUp Disk... which just seems to tell you to delete stuff.

I'm really starting to wonder if my os is a legit version.
