Hey, I have no idea why this happened - I usually go to the windows update site about once a month to get the latest patches but now it refuses to work .. It searche for updates and presents me with a list.. I can even download everything but then I get a message (during the install process) that the updates are not digitally signed- what's going on?? I tried returning all of my IE security levels to default but nothing seems to help..
Thanks for any info

Hmm, I know what could cause that to occur in Win2000, so try this...

  • Find the Administrative Tools (I don't know the precise route to it in WinXP, use Windows Help to find it if you need to)
  • Open Local Security Policy and then the Local Policies > Security Options folders
  • Look for Unsigned non-driver installation behavior near the bottom of the list and see if it's set to Do not allow. If so, change it.

If this is your work PC and not your own personal property, then check with your network administrator, because this could've been done to prevent unauthorized software installation without taking away your local Administrator status on the computer. Hope that helps with your question :)

HMmm.. Tried that- found LOCAL SECURITY POLICY but could not find a choice for UNSIGNED NON-DRIVER Installation.. found a UNSIGNED DEVICE INSTALLATION and changed it- didn't help..

It should be in the Security Options menu if it's like Win2000. Sorry to see your predicament there... try installing some other program as a test, maybe WinZip or something, and see if it objects to that also.

I don't think this is a resolution to your particular issue but it might be so I thought I would mention it....I had an issue previously where windows update would not work and it turned out to be the date being set to 2008....changed it back and all solved!

I just went through this yesterday and got if fixed for me.

You know the tab 'Automatic Updates' when you right click on 'My Computer'---- 'Properties'?

Just change the default setting to something else.

I changed mine and it worked all of a sudden....
