In windows xp, when hte setup cd offers a repair install, and a option to leave the file system intact.. these are different options..

what is the difference?

the latter would install a 2nd instance of Windows on the same partition IIRC.

ah, the parallel install, good point.. v useful..

But ,how about when I choose the "leave the current file system intact" option, at some point, offers pressing L to remove the existing windows installation. If I do that, then how are they different?

If you want to refresh WinXP

Boot from the CD and skip the first screen of the console repair as though you want a new install.

To new install will detect the current installation and would offer repair (Prees R_.

If you choose Repair it actually reinstall the whole OS on the same partition without touching the Applications, and Data (takes 30 min or more depending on the computer's hardware).

That is different from Vista and Win 7 that actually are trying to Repair the current OS installation.

I seriously doubt refresh windows xp means anything(but I know what you mean)..and I know where the options are for the installation that I speak of. Thanks for the tip about time, and those latter windows versions(I see they use very different looking screens and wording anyway, to win xp..).

But what is the difference(if any), in Win XP, between
a)Repair installation

b)The option to "Leave the current file system intact", then choosing L to delete the current windows installation.
