Win XP Upgrade and DialUp problem

I'm still a baby in Win XP, thus this question might be silly. Still...
I've upgraded to XP from Win 98 without problem. However, now my dialup, which worked fine under 98, refused to cooperate. It calls the server, passed the password, establish the connection (?) and that's it. I can't get to any single site. Also, it looks like mi computer sends the requests, but the server replies with very small packets of data.
Also (it just occured to me), I've used some modem optimisation tools in Win 98 (like MTU speed), can that screw up the dialup networking when carried over to XP?
All help is greatly appreciated!

I really have no idea what could be going on based on the information you've given, but perhaps you should check in the dial-up connection's properties to be sure that it's set to grab the IP and DNS information from the server (obtain DNS server addresses automatically).

I had the same problem with my Cognisurf connection - except I didn't upgrade. This is on my laptop, and it absolutely will not work unless I change one thing.

For username, I had to put in my full name.

so for example instead of just opterongeek I had to put opterongeek@myisp.com and then try to dial up. It's odd because in 9x I don't need to do this, but it works for my XP Laptop.
