Win XP update fails

I've tried to install this several times. But it fails without a descriptive error message.
Any ideas?

Have you tried downloading the patch manually (download.microsoft.com) and applying it?
Have you tried applying it in Safe Mode?
 
Go into your C:\Windows directory and look for a text file called Windows Update.log. Scroll to the very bottom of the log and find the error code. Do a Google search for that error code and proceed from there.
