WIn XP stuck in diagnostic mode

I used msconfigure to do a diagnostic start to remove a trojan Norton was not finding.

It never showed up in a search int he diagnostic start - no - I can get out of the diagnostic mode no mater what option I select in msconfigure. Moreover - Norton now thinks it sa trial version and has deactivated because I can't connect to the internet to activate it (diagnostic mode is not loading network sonnection drivers).

What the heck do I need to do to get this normal again???? The restore system button will not launch - so I can't set it back. In the control panel of windows for system restore - it says I have no dates! But I have saved dates.
 
Sounds similar to my problem. Can't figure it out and going to call MS on this. Sucks that they put out a service pack that's causing so many problems.
