Just read this at CNN.com:

REDMOND, Washington (AP) -- Microsoft Corp. plans to release on Monday a packet of upgrades for its Windows XP operating system, including changes to satisfy a proposed settlement with the U.S. Justice Department.

The so-called Service Pack 1 includes the usual software patches to fix security flaws and bugs, most of which have already been released separately, and adds temporary support for the Java programming language.

More significantly, though, it will allow computer manufacturers and consumers to switch off and conceal Microsoft's e-mail, Web browser, Internet audio-video player and other software programs. That gives computer vendors and users the option to select rival software -- instead of Microsoft applications -- as default programs.

The changes are part of a settlement reached by Microsoft, the Justice Department and nine states to resolve the government's landmark antitrust litigation against the software giant, which was found to have used illegal means against its competition.

Nine other states are seeking stricter penalties against Microsoft.

U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly in Washington, D.C., the same judge who will decide whether to approve the federal settlement, also must decide whether to grant the states any or all of their requests.

She is expected to make her decision in both cases within the next several months.

I am hoping that's what this means. I just may have to switch from Win2K to XP before the year is out.

I'm running SP1, and under Add/Remove windows components, I now see the Set Program and Access Defaults thing on the Add or Remove panel. It has the option to set it to Microsoft Windows, Non-Microsoft, or Custom.

yea, but running outlook express still starts it up, even if it is set to not be used.

So is it confirmed that you can remove Messenger from Add/Remove Programs? It sounds like XP SP1 should be out today- I'm going to check it out.

From what I read in mags, MS simply unlinks the shortcuts or the associations. All the program components would still be there.:disgust:

Just out of curiosity (I actually have a legitimate copy of XP Pro), did they implement that CD Key change to stop the Corporate version hacks from working, or is that going to be in SP2?

Actually, SP1 can't be installed on a machine where a hacked corporate version is installed. To get SP1 to install, one has to change the key and then SP1 can be installed. It will be interesting to see what changes SP2 brings about. However, if those who were running the "hacked" corporate version, then changed their key to install SP1, they may not have any issues with SP2 since their key has been changed from being a "hacked" corporate key to some key that was randomly generated - and proven to work.
