I just installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 on my mom's laptop (a Thinkpad R40), and I'm having a weird issue with boot up. As Windows boots up, I see the "Windows is starting..." dialog, then it disappears and the system enters a frozen state (you cannot see the desktop, start bar, or any icons). If I press Ctrl-Alt-Del, the boot up sequence will resume, and all will be well.
Also, if you leave the system alone for long enough, it will eventually complete booting up. But this is rather annoying.
We have it set up so that my mom is automatically logged in to the laptop, as she is the primary user of the machine. Has anyone seen this issue? The motherboard BIOS is up to date (I just updated it), and I have all the necessary Windows and Office updates. Found some malware with Ad-Aware, but the problem still occurs after I removed it.
Any and all suggestions are appreciated!
