WIN XP slow and crashing with Athlon XP

I just installed WIN XP on my Soyo Dragon plus board with an Athlon 1800+. My idle temp is around 41. It seems to crash at random times and when i load like the start menu it's still slow to display. I made the apprence for best performance too. As a whole the system doesn't seem to be running as fast as it should be. My old cele 700 semms to run faster then after i upgraded. I already got the K7 path off of winodws update site. Is there anything else i could get to speed things up. I'm running a 300watt enhance with 1 scsi cd-rom, 2 hd, 1 agp card, 2 pci cards with 256 mb crucial ram. Any suggestions would help.

Does the board support the athlon XP with the bios revision that it has?

I had no problems with this same mobo and cpu combination. My first guess would be that you're cpu is running hot, granted 41C is not high but that might not be an accurate reading. The bios was telling me the cpu was running between 32 and 36C and I'm sure it was hotter than that. I had no stability problems whatsoever with this system. The other issue could be the bios needing an update.

My first athlon system was very problematic, the reasons where one or all of these:

1)bios did not support chip.. had to flash. went from running laggy and crappy to running normal.
2)I needed a better power supply.
3)had a questionable motherboard (FIC SD11)

I really believe the two major issues with the system were the bios and the PS.

256mb ram should be more than enough, although I'm using 512MB. The soyo is an excellent motherboard so I don't think that's an issue unless the bios is not up to date. I'm not familiar with your PS, it might be an issue. Lastly, your cpu fan might not be adequate for your processor... if it's overheating than you're in for a lot more than lagging and random crashes.

I have the EXACT same symptoms running on a P3-900 Laptop (toshiba 3000-s353) with a Geforce2Go... so it doesn't seem to be a mobo and bios problem

start icon opens VERY slowly, and system hangs at weird times... cursor just freezes, music stops, hd stops

hope i can finish typing this msg before it crashes again
