WIN XP slow and crashing with Athlon XP

I just installed WIN XP on my Soyo Dragon plus board with an Athlon 1800+. My idle temp is around 41. It seems to crash at random times and when i load like the start menu it's still slow to display. I made the apprence for best performance too. As a whole the system doesn't seem to be running as fast as it should be. My old cele 700 semms to run faster then after i upgraded. I already got the K7 path off of winodws update site. Is there anything else i could get to speed things up. I'm running a 300watt enhance with 1 scsi cd-rom, 2 hd, 1 agp card, 2 pci cards with 256 mb crucial ram. Any suggestions would help.

urm I would suspect the Video card drivers... maybe other drivers also.

I personally had problems like that when i in stall the soundblaster driver up grade for my on board sound.
