Just installed Win Xp Pro on a new drive (WD 120 gig 8MB) Somewhere along the line I am unable to restart the computer. It will shut off but hangs on a restart. If I hit the reset button it will restart without problem. It hangs after saving and logging off and right when the screen says "windows is shutting down." The mouse is fozen and Cntl Alt Del does nothing. I have a Asus A7v266-E 528 ram, a Geforce2 card with the latest drivers. It may have started when I downloaded the Apple Movie player, I forget the name. I tried to uninstall it but there are still remnants of the program around.

I have XP Pro and started getting this problem a couple months ago as well. I remember seeing an article in the MSFT KNowledge Base about it last night when I was looking for a different problem.

It could be something else as well, I'm assuming you are refuring to quicktime however I dont think quicktime would cause this. I would look for more hardware related issues.

My box at home doesnt restart correctly because I have it OCd, I could bring it down to spec but I think that extra 600 mhz is worth having to hit the switch once and again. :D

Well I have not changed the hardware since installing the OS. I have added some USB stuf but I don't think that is it. And, yes I'm talking about Quicktime. As far as the windows knowledge base, I have looked there and found lots of info about problems shutting down but have not seen anyting about restarts. Also, have you ever read the steps to find a shut down problem? It is incredible the number of steps one has to go through to troubleshoot. I bought Win XP to get away from that kind of busy work. How about a win repair or reinstall. How does that work in XP?

Well I solved it. Actually Vlad of ComputerStop, Bellevue WA solved it. It was a bad network card. I removed it and the PC restarted okay. My NetGear 311 aparently doesn't get along with my Asus board in XP. Either that or it broke at the same time I installed XP. Anyway a $6 realtek card later, I am back in business.

Thanks to all who tried this one.
