Hello, I tried swapping a motherboard today (took out an iwill kk266+ and replaced it with a fic au13) new memory and processor, but same ide drives and pci cards. Xp boots and tells me that something isnt right or it didnt start up normally, and asks me if i want to continue normal boot or go to last known config or to safe mode. I tried all three options and all three lead to a reboot with a quick flash of a blue screen right before. any suggestions? thanks

1. how many times did you try?
sometimes i have reboot-cycles of 5 times till it fully loads (seems almost random to me sometimes)

2. but as you changed quite some basic stuff (mobo, ram-type) could be that. maybe a repair-setup will work. (boot from winxp cd, then repair instalation)

3. or maybe it's a xp activation code thingy. i read, that if you change to much hardware it wants a reactivation (don't know if it's related to your prob)

4. last option reinstall over the existing installation (maybe your settings aren't lost (but not shure of that))

hope somebody else has some ideas on this.

and welcome to AT:beer: and good luck

different chipset? if so, you're almost definitely going to have to do a repair install of XP and then reapply any patches.

You're getting a STOP 0x7B blue screen. Follow the instructions I gave in other threads about this topic.

thanks guys, i can do a repair installation of win xp, but i just wasnt sure if that was the way to go or if it would damage the info on my drives at all. So then supposedly after i follow through the repair install i would be able to acces my drives normally and install the patches from the mobo cd? Oh and thanks for the welcome luagsch.

Ideally you need to do a clean install of XP...something like 7 items changed and you need to reinstall but a repair should suffice but do a fresh install at the next oppotunity

I usually like to have an PCI ATA controller card when I do this kind of upgrade. That way, you have a common IDE controller from one mb to the other and OS has the driver to boot from the IDE controller. Otherwise, pull the PCI bus from safe mode before you change the mb, then when you install the new mb, the OS -should- reboot with basic IDE controller drivers to let you install the new chipset drivers. Guess it's too late now though.
