I purchased from VioSoftware once before. They sell "OEM" software. I bought a legal copy of Flash 8 and it registered fine with Adobe/Macromedia.

The downside to XP x64 is driver support. Or lack thereof. I wouldn't doubt some 32 bit drivers can be hacked or something but I didn't see what compelling reason there was to add hassle. I don't know if it'll run 101% of your 32 bit apps at full speed, either. Something about running a 32 bit translator program or somesuch. I'm sure someone can clarify.

The other thing is that 64-bit O/S allows you to run over 4 gigs of ram. I've heard XP 64 bit O/S is a pain running due to lack of driver support, as Donxvi has stated. Why bother with it? Either get the 32-bit version or wait for Vista, as I see it.

By the way, I've seen statements that the really big thing about Vista is that it has enhanced MS's DRM, and that it's supporting the new Blu ray & HD DVD stuff. Anyone else heard anything on this?

If that's all that's really new, I'd just as soon stick with XP for now. :disgust:

- You will need a CPU that is compatible.
- You may not be able to find drivers for all your hardware.
- If this is OEM, you will not be able to install it on more than one motherboard even if you remove it from the first one based on the Microsoft license agreement.

XP Professional is eligible for the is eligible for the free Vista upgrade if it's boxed, which this doesn't look to be.

I installed XP64 on my AMD FX-55. I was very surprised with the extent of the driver support. All my devices including my Belkin wireless card installed with no problems with the default XP64 drivers.

Make sure to get the latest video and audio drivers though for best performance.

PS Will not work with Starforce games.

Mainstream video, audio, and motherboards have 64 bit drivers. Things like printers and accessories lack drivers. My HP2500 wirelss photo printer/scanner/fax is set up asColorjet 990c and works fine as a printer. Thats it though. Before committing, check for drivers for the devices you will use. My machine is strictly for games and VMware but I have another (opteron 246's) for more general use running XP pro. If you have but one pc, I'd shy away from it.

Additonally, it seems that 64 bit is a bit slower to start installing 32 bit apps as it figures things out. Once running, the apps are fine and 64 bit apps fly. I haven;t run into any programs that I can't install (except maybe nero, but this isn't a dvd buring machine). For me, the hassle of drivers was outweighed by more ram and using my processors to their fullest (Opteron 250's, 8GB of RAM, Intel 8 port SATA with 6 160's in RAID5, 7900GS SLI).

Good luck,
EH

From the pciture it looks like the version my daughter (who is in college) gave it to me which cost her something like $5 bought in her school book store.
I've installed and have been using it for over a year now in my AMD rig (see sig).
It has been very much stable & flawless and it's FAST.
I had a small minor problem finding the wireless usb adaptor that worked but did finally find one, made by MSI.
It gets a thumb up from me.

NOT true! You CAN get OEM versions with the Vista coupon.

Whether or not this one has the coupon with it, though, Im not sure.

99% of games work. I know, I've been running X64 for a long time now. Some really old game installers don't recognize the OS and will not install without some hacking.
Mainstream hardware is supported very well, with the notable exception of a lot of TV tuner cards. Hauppauge does not support their older line of 787 based tuners, most other makes don't either.
Besides that I have not encountered any problems at all, but the benefit that the odd 64-bit version of a game (UT2004, Farcry for example) run on my system and do give some benefits.

To sum it up: it works well, but it can be a hassle. If you're not a really good tinkerer, don't bother. To be honest.. if you have to ask, you don't *need* it. And it's too much of a PITA just to mess with it.

Let me add, the Kworld ATSC110 HDTV tuner works very well too, using BeyondTV 4.5 rev but you need to go to Kworld site to download its x64/Vista driver there.
When the tuner card plugged in it was recognized instantly and I have not had any issue displaying or recording any of my favorite tv shows.

This software is being sold illegally!

1) The pic (if accurate) shows a volume licensed copy
2) "This is the full version Windows XP Pro x64 Edition with Hologram CD and Keycode for registration. This version is not intended for commercial use." means NFR

Caveat Emptor and they have been reported to MS. :)

very likely it's the academic version, intended to be sold to students/teachers. I bought a copy last year from the other big online supplier for about the same. Was kinda pissed since I could just as easily buy this same version along with the 32-bit xp pro and 2003 server bundled together for $5 from my school (which I have).

When x64 first came out the issue was drivers, but not anymore. Second is that you need a 64bit processor (not every one has). Other than that, x64 has a slight performance edge over the 32bit version. It's also a bit smoother at multitasking.

The only real downside (I can think of) is there are two versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer installed. One version written in 32bit (for legacy plugins/Legacy Active X APPS) and the other is written in 64bit for better performance.

Gosh.......thank you for protecting all of us poor, pathetic, individuals from possibly breaking the law. It's always good to have those self-appointed police-types to protect us who have no clue.

Right.............:disgust:
