Win XP Prof. - Problem

When booting up computer the following error comes up.
Please advise how to correct this problem.

Application Error

The application failed to initialized properly

*Screen has background but no icons
Also, under My Recent Documents ? nothing shows up

explorer.exe is the GUI in windows that you see... so it's not loading properly, you won't see anything on your screen but the wallpaper.

You're going to need to do an XP repair, or possibly reinstall XP itself.
