I have Win XP Home version on my laptop now. I also have a Win XP Pro full version CD. Can I upgrade Home version to Pro using this CD and retain all programs and settings? I cannot do a clean installation because Toshiba doesn't provide an applications CD. All I have is recovery CDs, 3 of them. Thanks.

salsal, yes you can upgrade your lappy from XP Home to XP Pro as long as that XP Pro isn't already installed in another rig. Like MisterMe, posted, is there any particular reason you want XP Pro on your Tosh lappy? For the average user, he/she doesn't use the "added" features of XP Pro.

Thanks for the help. I need offline files as I need to connect to network at work and don't want to get cut off. Win2k has it but not XP Home. I know XP Pro has it also. As long as I can retain programs on my Tosh lappy I should be Ok. Thanks again.

Actually Microsoft changed the licensing with Office XP. Now its one computer one license. You get just one shot now.

Their licensing web page still states that you can install retail copies of Office XP on a desktop and a laptop. You cannot do it with OEM copies.

Q. Can I install my copy of Office XP on my home computer and my laptop?

A. Yes. According to the End User License for Microsoft Software, you can install and use your retail copy of Office XP on a single desktop computer and on your laptop, for your exclusive use. However, this does not apply to Office XP product licenses acquired with the purchase of a computer. These original equipment manufacturer (OEM) licenses are single-use licenses that cannot be transferred to another desktop computer or laptop. To learn more about activation policies, visit the Microsoft Product Activation page.
