I have run Seti on the exact same machine with both operating systems. I upgraded from Win2K to Windows XP Pro.

I saw no discernible difference between the Operating Systems. Windows XP is the Win2K kernel with some added bells and whistles...

That is my personal experience with the two OSs

You have to shut off all the animation crap in Windows XP but after you do that they are pretty darn equal. I agree with the rest though I refuse to use any operating system other than Windows 2K it kicks butt.

B18 is right on the nose with that one.

Win2K rulez. heheh.

Linux is fun if you're doing a bunch of nodes though. I wouldn't discount the learning experience that comes with doing a Linux server. It's well worth it, and you get another GEEK button. :Q

Edit:

Oh yeah... I recommend Linux Mandrake. Very nice job they did on that one.

Win2K forever!
I've heard no more support in 9 months for Win2000 though, which really sucks nard.. anyone know for sure? I will keep using it as long as XP is still the mainstream one out....

Hmm. I actually prefer WinXP over Win2K. But that is just me. But do run them both and there is no speed difference. I did see a thread yesterday where A guy was testing speeds with Linux and found that the best times where running under wine. So that is interesting.

As long as you have more than 128 MB of RAM and do as Baldy18 says then either one is fine. I prefer WinXP Pro! Either one does much better with VLAR WUs, so your average will be improved over Win9x.

I saw a poll thread on the 2000/XP question (not doing with DC) a while back with dozens of responses. As you can imagine, the responses were evenly split between the 2 OSes.

Most of us business geeks like 2K so well it's hard to imagine it's from M$. I really need to get more exposure to XP

/me can't believe that I used to like Win 95 and NT4.
