Win XP Pro...New installation sound problems

I just did a clean install of WinXP Pro onto my system. I have an EPoX 8RDA+ motherboard (using drivers I DL'd from EPoX website). CPU is Athlon XP 2100+ with 512 MB Crucial PC2100 DDR.

My problem is this: The sound starts popping and skipping at random times and I have to reboot to correct it (in which case it happens again at a random time). I have only noticed it when playing games so far (I have only installed Mechwarrior 3 and HalfLife GOTY). Sometimes I can play the games for 20-30 min before it starts, other times only 5 min. I have NO background processes running (not SETI@HOME or even the background progs for my Asus TV Tuner. I disabled everything I thought was safe from startup using MSConfig.

This is actually my second install of Win XP, as I had the same problem yesterday. Wiped it all out and started over...I originally had the latest NForce2 drivers installed, then went back to Unified Drivers EPoX had posted on their website.

I am about to try the same games in Win98 Compatibility mode, but I did that yesterday to no effect. Anyone have any ideas?

EDIT: Compatibility mode had no effect...help pls?

Yah, I thot so too...I was at wit's end (it's a little humid there, but VERY pretty) ;-) so I thot, "WTH" and put it on. I have not had one problem in over 24 hours. yay.
