Win XP Pro - Need help transferring files into it

I have just built a new Pentium 4 computer and my OS is Win XP Pro. For this new machine I switched from ME. All my installs are going fine and the learning curve seems fairly easy and fun.

Where I am having a problem is trying to bring all my Outlook Express folders over into it and also my address book. I backed up all my .dbx files from OE in the old computer and copied them into the new OE in XP and nothing happened. They don't show up. Same with the address book. I copied the .wab and the .wa~ from the old to the new and no names or addys show up. I brought all my Favorites over and they went in fine and they work. Now I am getting frustrated and feeling stupid because I know there is a way to get them in there but can't figure it out. I have done this is the past with new computers and new OSs and it always worked. HELP 😕 while I still have some hair left on my head and thanks in advance.

Desperate in CA

I do this at work all the time because of migration from Win9X to 2K or XP. Here is what I do:

1. If your old computer is still running, start OE. Then File --> Export --> Address Book. Select Text File (Comma Seperated Values). Save it to your desktop or onto a floppy. Address books are small unless you have a massive amount of contacts.

2. Messages: In OE, right click on the Inbox and select Properties. You'll see the path. Copy the path until the last folder. Do not copy Inbox.dbx. Open an Explorer window. Hit paste. There is your mail folder. Hit Select All, Copy and then paste in a folder where you can bring it over to the new computer.

3. Bring both the Address Book and the folder with all the mail to the new computer. If you used a CD, make sure the files aren't 'Read Only'.

4. Open OE on your new box. Find the path where your mail is stored by right clicking on Inbox and then properties. Copy all of the path but the Inbox.dbx file. Again, open an Explorer window, hit paste and you should see the folder where your mail is stored.

5. Shutdown OE. Copy the old mail .dbx files and other files to the folder you just opened up.

6. Restart OE. You should see your old mail and folders. Then click File --> Import --> Other Address Book --> Text File (Comma Seperated Values). Find the address book from your old computer and import.

Hey Burnedout, here's a Cyber 6 pack for you. I am getting reading to have a Corona myself. I need to thank you again for your help. IT WORKED! I am so happy. My mail and addresses are back. All I need now are some folders that I have in My Docs and I'm sure I can just dump those in. I am saving your info so I can help others if they need it.

Again thanks and take care, Jill
