im trying to do a fresh install of win xp pro....i deleted the hard drive portion then reformatted it.....after about 2 hours when it comes to 100% a screen then comes up that says "setup was unable to format the partition. The disk may be damaged. Make sure the drive is switched on and properly connected to your computer. If the disk is a SCSI disk, make sure your SCSI devices are properly terminated. Consult your computer manual or SCSI adapter documentation for more information"

any idea whats wrong?

I had no problem installing windows on the hard drive previsously. I check all the connections and everything seems to be in order.

Don't have an immediate answer for you, but I suggest you create a ~15-20GB partition to put your OS on. Even if you don't want to separate the OS from files (and I don't see why you wouldn't), formatting your hdd will be much quicker and you will be able to figure this problem out quicker.

I've had this problem before and the only way I was able to fix it is by zero'ing the hdd. Using the manufacturer hdd utilities re-zero the hdd.
