Win XP Pro Hangs on Shutdown/Restart

Does anyone know how to fix this? I've recently ran some registry cleaners, and this problem showed up shortly after. If I try to reboot windows right after it's started up, there's no problem. But once I've been playing around for a while, when I go to reboot it either:

1. Just sits there on the desktop unresponsive. I can get the task manager up, but I still can't shutdown. And whenever I move the task manager, the background behind it just turns white.
2. Or it'll go to "Windows is shutting down..." and just sit there.

Anyone know how to fix this? Is there a "fix it" program out there that addresses these kinda problems? What's causing this?

Thanks in advance.

Yea...though about that, but it's been doing this for a bit over a week now and I'm worried that newly installed software won't work w/the old registry.

Do you see any "userenv" errors in your application event log? You may not have any if you have to reboot manually. Anyway, poke around the Microsoft web site for UPHclean.

You may easily have other errors and/or a corrupt registry. UPHclean is a quick and easy fix MS wrote to fix apps not releasing the user profile hive.

good luck!

No error's b/c I do a hard reboot each time.

Thanks for the advice...I'll go look for UPHclean and give it a try. 🙂

Okay so I installed UPHclean and here are the error's i'm getting in the event viewer:

Description:
wuauclt (2244) Database recovery failed with error -1216 because it encountered references to a database, 'C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\DataStore.edb', which is no longer present. The database was not brought to a consistent state before it was removed (or possibly moved or renamed). So what now? Any fix?

UPHclean writes its own event in the log, and is identified as such. You are getting errors with wuauclt, which is the Automatic Updates function. I do not understand why UPHclean would cause these errors to logged, as these are not events UPHclean was written for.

Are these events showing up when you shutdown the machine (as determined by the timestamp)?

Does your system still refuse to shutdown?

You apparently have a problem with the Automatic Updates logging which may (or may not) be the cause of your shutdown problems. Either way, I would certainly address the problem if this were my system before installing any more software. You can start by simply clicking the url which appears in the event, and poking around the MS knowledge base for information. Probably won't find much though!

I just poked around google for "Event Id: 494" and "esent event 494". Numerous hits with conflicting or confusing info for Win XP. Perhaps a trojan according to several sites. You might want to see if Automatic Updates can work on your system, even if you have disabled it. I wouldn't be surprised if you see the same errors.

Good luck!

Edit: I just re-read the bit in your original post about being able to shutdown right after starting but not after "playing around awhile".

This also leads me to suspect Automatic Updates is a messed up; the wuauclt process kicks in a few moments after other startup processes have completed. To see it - boot up, start Task Manager when you can, click the Image Name column to sort the names, and as your system boots, you will probably see wuauclt start up in a minute or so.

Hi I have had the same trouble the only thing that has helped is to delete the file c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\DataStore.edb that seems to help until a restart have not found a proper resalution for the problume yet if you do please let me know
