I have 5 Windows XP Pro computers which I set up on our Novell 5.1 LAN.
These are Standard installs of XP on 1.4 Ghz Celeron-Tualatin computers with 256 mb RAM so the computers are reasonably fast.
Most of our 140 or so computers are still on NT 4 (svc pk 6a) and even the much slower machines are pretty resonsive when opening Windows NT Explorer to browse folders and files. However, there is usually a substantial delay when browsing the network on the XP boxes... apparently it has to rebrowse the entire network to refresh the view?
I'm wondering if there aren't different settings in windows for the browser, refresh cycles (master browser settings)or perhaps a service is set up differently? We can browse machines on the network via TCPIP over NetBIOS as well as browsing file from Novell file servers (having authenticated to the Novell network with proper credentials etc)
Another issue I have had with the XP: We have an Exchange 2000 server and run the Outlook client on our workstations. The XP computers take a long time to connect unless I create HOSTS table on the workstation with the IP address and computer name and domain name of the Exchange server. I don't have to do this on the NT boxes, or the 2000 boxes... only the XP computers. I believe the DNS address is entered on the XP computers to. Ideas?
Seems to be XP has some differences in default installation different than NT or even 2000 which cause some issues.
