are there different xp pro cd's being manufactured? instead of having my brother mail me my copy (he just received 2 from retail.microsoft.com/training), im thinking of just using the activation key/cd-key that came with it and my roommate's copy of xp pro, until i go back home for thanksgiving and get my cd. this would save him from having to ship it to me. ive heard something about cd's coming with sp1 on them. are there any identifying features to look for?
thanks to anyone who can help.

OEM copies of Windows XP will only work with OEM seriel numbers. Retail copies will only work with retail serial numbers. You will not be able to activate Windows using your roommates activation number, as Windows will stop working on his/her computer once you activate it on yours. You can generally use any CD, so long as you have a unique serial number of your own, and a matching CD type (ie, Retail or OEM).

That's not true. I have this...um...friend, yeah, that's right my friend, who's running 2 activated copies of the same XP Pro CD on 2 different computers. He tell me he's been doing this since the OS came out and has never had any problem with MS disabling one or the other. He keeps both fully patched from WinUpdate and has installed sp1 on each too. Of course this isn't legal to do, but that's the kind of guy he is, he lives on the edge!

I was understanding that he would be using the install key from one of his brothers' freebie disks, Not his roommates.

From what I have seen that you can have 1 key activated on 2 different machines no more than that is possible though
