Hi there.

Im trying to fix an install of XP on a work computer. Heres what was happening- it would boot past the xp boot screen, then the blue screen would flash up so quickly it was impossible to read (but the screen wasnt full of text, it looked like only a few lines of numbers and letters in the top left hand). Then it would restart etc

So i did a reinstall of windows. It now boots and i can put in the password to connect to the domain. The tray icons then load and everything looks good to go. This is now where the problems start.

If i click the start button, it pushes in (like changes colour), but nothing happens. If i right click, nothing happens. If i ctrl, alt delete, everything but the background disappears.

Is my install of xp stuffed or is their something i can do to fix it? Perhaps it had a virus.. can i go in safe mode and run virus scans or what do you guys suggest?

Would love help as reinstalling everything will be a nightmare.

Thanks

Since regular mode doesnt work, boot to safe mode.

First use a program like ccleaner to delete all temp files.

Install Spybot SD to another working computer and get it updated. Copy all program files for Spybot to a flash drive. Then launch Spybot from the flash drive on the not working computer. Scan. Fix viruses, spyware.

You can also use a program like Avira Rescue System to boot up the computer then scan for viruses. Works on most computers less than 5 years old. Link:http://www.free-av.com/en/tool...vir_rescue_system.html

Is this a networked desktop (ie programs reside on it)?
Or a workstation (ie. programs reside on a server somewhere?

this is a networked desktop. programs reside on the workstation but their data files are stored on the server
