Can anyone direct me to a site (tutorial) that tells me how to set up a home network without internet sharing for a Win XP Pro and a Win 98 SE machine?
Or better, give me a brief outline on the configuration needed for both machines to get them to "see" each other on the network.

Also, what is the best method of moving email address book and email inbox from the Win 98 SE machine under Outlook Express to the Win XP Pro machine under Outlook?

Thanks,

I used the network setup wizard in XP to set up the XP/98 network I have. XP is the main machine and it creates a disk to use in the client machines. I also use ICS but I think I set that up separately.

Hope that helps ...

Just what I wanted to know, ie whether the XP Wizard handled Win 98 setups. I have done it manually in the past with NetBUI

I had both my 98 box and my fresh XP box plugged into my router when I installed XP. After the install, all my shared folders that I already had on my old 98 box were seen on the network through the XP box. I manually configured NOTHING- it worked like a champ with a default installation of XP Pro. Not sure if the same would be the case with XP Home?? Keep in mind that NFTS partitions will not be seen on the network while accessing through FAT32 partitions- ie- you can see your 98 shares from XP, but not your XP shares from 98.

I never thought about the Fat32/NTFS problems. I have my XP computer in a 98/XP dual boot but I have only given the client computers access to a shared folder and a storage drive that is still on Fat32.

I just helped a friend set up a small network on a new Dell machine to connect to an older Win95 machine. From what I have seen, the network functions but from what you are saying is that the 95 machine won't be able to see anything on the XP machine right, unless it has a Fat32 partition?

I forgot about that ... might have to rethink that situation ...

What about moving the emails and address book from Outlook Express on the 98 box to Outlook non-Express on the Win XP Pro box? What files do I look for on the 98 box?

usually the XP setup wizard doesnt work (Or so i have found) i tried that with a laptop running 98 and my PC running XP. If you want file sharing then i think you have to enable internet sharing as well, go to each folder you want to share and right click co to sharing and security and enable that folder to be shared. You have to do this with EVERY folder. Then go to control panel and enable iternet and printer sharing. Thats how i did it anyway. This will allow file printer and internet sharing but you dont have to use the internet share jus connect as normal.
