Win Xp Pro and new motherboard install

Sorry for the previous blank post, my dog jumped on the keyboard.

Anyway, just getting opinions on the easist way to do a new mobo install with an existing HD with Win XP Pro.
I have corporate edition so no activation issues.

Is it usually OK to just do a repair installation routine?

I will be going from a 440BX chipset to an 850e or 845e mobo.

I can do a reinstall, but the present installation is only a couple months old and runs great.

Thanks for any information.

The best way is to reformat and do a fresh install. I guess that you could also go to Safe Mode and remove all the devices, shut down, install the new hardware, and then restart normally. Somebody correct me if this is a bad idea.

I guess I am trying to avoid a reformat and reinstall.
I do have two hard drives and could just back everything up, and go through the whole routine, but
as we all know it takes several days before you have everything set up again the way you want.

I did a motherboard install in XP Home without formatting. All I did was to remove the AMD busmastering drivers before I installed the new VIA-based motherboard. On reboot, XP found all the new hardware. I had absolutely NO problems doing it that way. XP removed all the old entries in Device Manager (I even booted in Safe mode after the successful install to make sure no old entries remained, and none did). As long as you have a good backup, you can do the motherboard install without reinstalling XP.

Thanks. It can't hurt to give it a try first before a reformat and reistall.
I will back up everything on the second HD before I try anything.
