Hi all,

I hope you can help me with a recent problem. My Internet connection on Windows XP SP2 was fine until I uninstalled the latest version of IMesh. I am connected through the computer via cable modem and when I check 'Network Connection' I have the 'Local Area Connection' icon on and everything appears to be fine. It says I'm connected, it tells me at what speed, etc. But when I try to surf the web or play a game; nothing happens. It's like the connection does not exist. All the other computers I have connected to the cable modem work fine. Is there some master on/off switch that was accidentally triggered to stop all internet activity on my computer? Sorry for noob question.

Thanks all.

ps. I seem to recall this happening once before. I was long overdue for a reformat so I said screw it and that was my solution. I'd rather not do that this time. :)

Ok, what I thought ..... I just checked iMesh out by downloading it myself and starting the install process. In the ULA right at the beginning it states that "this software integrates advertising technology" meaning ...... SPYWARE ...... When you uninstalled iMESH, you probably uninstalled the spyware it contained .... upsetting your winsock layer and BINGO, no internet connection at all!

Certain spyware likes to add files to your winsock layer and or host file. Lets start by having you download Winsock XP fix from HERE. (Assuming you run Win XP, of course ... if not, let me know what OS you got.) You'll want to save it to a floppy, cd or some other removable media and transfer it to your machine. Run the program. This should get your internet connection working again.

Next

Download spybot s&d from HERE. Install it and then update it, but don't do anything else just yet. Once you've gotten the program installed and updated, boot your computer into safe-mode by repeatedly tapping your F8 key right after you see the post screen. Once in safe-mode, open spybot and run your scan. When its done, click the button "fix selected problems" and let it do its thing. If it asks to run on next reboot, allow it to so that it can finish cleaning your machine.

Unfortunately

This may not remove everything. So, I'd like you to download HijackThis from HERE. Don't leave it in your temporary directory since it won't work right from there. Also, don't install it on your desktop for the same reason. Put it in its own folder like c:\HijackThis. Once you've done that, open it and run its scan. Don't do anything else at this time other than save the results to a log. Copy that entire log file and post it in your next post. I want to take a look and make sure we got it all.

as DetroitSportsFan said, imesh contains spyware/adware and winsockfix will be your best shot.

some adware/spyware kills or damadges your internet connection when you try to remove it.

first, fully remove imesh via these instructions
imesh removal

after you do that, follow my instructions in the malware removal guide

Virus and Spyware removal

follow the instructions on how to post your hijackthis log and let us see it.

The damadge to your internet connection will most likely still exist. use these apps to repair your connection

LSP-Fix
WinSockFix (should work in 2k also)
