Win XP no boot

Need help getting XP top boot on COMPAQ presario laptop. Ran defrag lastnight, ok checked email, shutdown. This AM will not come up in safe mode, last known config etc. Treied to repair but will not create Windoes/repair folder. Suspect has something to do with COMPAQ. Any Ideas pls....need to save wife's data....

Can you login in the safe mode.... If not what error do you get...
If you have access to another PC( I assume you have after reading your posts) try creating a Barts PE cd.... Try booting with it...
