I'm trying to help out my niece and take her old puter and tweek it by doing a RECOVERY, updating firmware and drivers, and also trying to update SP3 and .Net framework 2, but even with Windows update on Automatic, and I've tried to search on Windowsupdate site, when i get to the page with EXPRESS or CUSTOM the Express takes me to a page that has only one option....IT developers that need to update on more than one computer, then it says if you only need to update to one computer, then go to this site". I'm going around in circles here! Then I get this message below:

"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem."
ERROR # 0x8024400A

Auto updates are ON and enabled...why doesn't Windows update the SP3 and .NET FRAMEWORK? Even when I go to the Installing SP3 on ONE computer, it always takes me back to the Network develper on more than one computer then the error message again and again!

This is the download you want: Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers It's simply the complete offline SP3 update...the fancy title throws a lot of people off. The web installer (express), or trying to install SP3 through Windows update is NOT what you want.

The installation sequence goes like this: Windows XP first then reboot; install SP3 second then reboot; then go to Windows Update. After the first set of Windows Update downloads are installed, reboot, then go back to Windows Update and check for updates a second time. After installing SP3, followed by Windows update, you should be running NET 3.5 SP1. If Windows Update doesn't bump you up to NET 3.5 SP1 you can go to Microsoft's download section and download the redistributable (full file) executable.

Before trying to install anything else, and especially before downloading and installing Service Pack 3, or any Windows updates, open a command prompt window and type the following:

chkdsk C: /x /v /f /r [then press enter]

CHKDSK will tell you it can't access the drive, and ask you if you want CHKDSK to run at the next restart; type Y, then press enter. Then restart your PC and CHKDSK will run prior to booting to the Windows login screen. Don't interrupt the process; be patient because it will take some time to complete, depending on the capacity of your HDD. After CHKDSK finishes, download and install SP3, then your updates.
