Win XP loads, no icons, things running slow...

My computer has been acting up. It loads win XP, but all my icons are gone. Some of the ones in the menu have invalid icons. I am unable to load any program. Did I get hit with a virus? How do I fix this? I checked my memory, and it fits good.

sounds like the icon library has been corrupted, perhaps. I know tweakui can rebuild them. I'd also go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and have it scan all files and drives completely.
