I haven't made any upgrades or added any new software for a long time and today my computer decides to not want to startup win xp. It goes through bios and it gets to the black screen with the win xp logo and then it restarts my comp. Please help. Does anyone know what I should try without having to reformat? I tried command prompt and safemode but after I select those options, the comp just restarts as well.

Try using the F8 at boot and select

Last Known Good Boot

from the DOS menu.

if last known good doesn't work try doing a repair installation

also may want to run a test on your RAM, or see if you can boot into safe mode and turn off the automatic reboot so you can see what blue screen (if any) it is giving
